Question 12Principles of American GovernmentOn the 65/20 list

What is the economic system of the United States?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • Capitalism
  • Free market economy

What does this answer mean?

The United States has a capitalist, or free market, economy. USCIS accepts either answer: capitalism or free market economy.

In this system, most businesses are owned by private people and companies, not by the government. Prices, wages, and what gets made are mostly decided by buyers and sellers in the market. People are free to start a business, choose their work, and own property.

The government still sets rules. The Constitution gives Congress the power to regulate trade between the states and with other countries, and to coin money. The Fifth Amendment protects private property: the government can't take it for public use without paying fair compensation. Laws on matters like safety and taxes also shape how the market works.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. Both answers are short, so choose the one that's easier for you to say: "capitalism" or "free market economy."

Memory tip

Free market: people are free to buy, sell, and own businesses.
