Privacy Policy

How Citizenshiply handles your information on this website and in the practice interview app, in plain language.

Last updated

The short version

  • You don't need an account to read our guides or use the free tools.
  • The free tools save your progress only in your own browser. We never receive it.
  • Our sites use analytics cookies from PostHog and Google Analytics to see how they're used. We never use them for advertising.
  • We never sell your personal information or share it for advertising.
  • We don't ask about your immigration status, and we don't use your account to guess it.
  • If you create a practice interview account, you can download your data or delete the account at any time.

Who we are

Citizenshiply is run by Viatlas, LLC, registered in Delaware, United States. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Viatlas, LLC.

This policy covers the Citizenshiply website (www.citizenshiply.com) and the practice interview app (interview.citizenshiply.com).

Citizenshiply is an independent educational service. We are not affiliated with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or any other government agency.

To reach us about privacy, see Contact.

What we collect

What we collect depends on how you use Citizenshiply.

On the free website

  • No account. You can read every guide and use every free tool without signing up.
  • Tool progress stays on your device. Dates, trip lists, checklists, and practice results are saved in your browser's storage. They are not sent to us. See Cookies and browser storage.
  • The local answers lookup. If you type an address to find your representative, it goes to our server and on to Geocodio, which tells us the congressional district. We don't log or store the address. The tool saves only your state and district number, in your browser.
  • Basic request logs. Like any website, our hosting provider, Railway, and Cloudflare, which routes and protects traffic to the site, receive technical details when your browser loads a page, such as your IP address, your browser type, and the page you asked for.
  • Emails you send us. If you write to us, we receive your email address and your message.
  • How you use the sites. Our sites use PostHog and Google Analytics to measure how they're used: the pages you visit, the buttons you click, your device and browser, your approximate location (worked out from your IP address), and how you found us. They set cookies to recognize your browser on later visits. They don't record what you type into the tools. We load Google Analytics through Google Tag Manager, and we use Tag Manager only for that.

If you create an account

Accounts exist only in the practice interview app. When you create one, we store:

  • Your email address, and whether you sign in by email or with Google.
  • Your settings: your language, the plan you chose or showed interest in, and whether you have early access.
  • Your choices, with dates: when you accepted the Terms of Service and the AI disclosure (at sign-up), whether you turned on marketing emails and when, and when you first saw the plans. Marketing emails are off unless you turn them on in the app or on your account page.
  • Your balance: your interview credits, any unlimited access dates, and whether you've used the free mini interview.

We keep this account data with Supabase, our database and sign-in provider.

In the app, PostHog records which features you use. We don't send your email address or other account details to analytics.

Sign-in emails. To sign you in, we email you a sign-in link and a one-time code. These emails are sent by Resend, which receives your email address to deliver them.

Signing in with Google. If you choose Google, Google confirms who you are and shares your email address with us. Google may also share basic profile details, such as your name and profile picture, which our sign-in provider stores with your account. We don't use them for anything else. Google's own privacy policy covers what Google collects.

Payments

Paddle sells our plans as our reseller and merchant of record: it processes your payment, adds any sales tax, sends your receipt, and handles refunds. You pay inside the app, in a secure checkout provided by Paddle. We never see or store your card details. We send Paddle your email address (to fill in the checkout), your account ID, the plan you're buying, and your language. Paddle also collects what it needs as the seller, such as your country and payment details, and uses it under its own privacy policy. We receive a confirmation of the payment: the plan, the amount, the currency, and Paddle's transaction ID.

We'll update this policy before the practice interview and purchases become available.

How we use it

We use information only to:

  • run the website and the free tools;
  • find your congressional district when you ask;
  • create your account, sign you in, and keep it secure;
  • remember your language and the plan you chose;
  • answer messages you send us;
  • send you news and offers, only if you turned marketing emails on;
  • keep records of purchases, once purchases are available;
  • meet legal obligations and prevent abuse, such as more than one free mini interview per person.
  • understand how people use the sites, so we can fix problems and improve them;

We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't sell it.

Immigration status and sensitive information

Simply having an account on a citizenship interview practice service can suggest that a person isn't a U.S. citizen yet. Some U.S. state privacy laws treat citizenship and immigration status as sensitive information. We take that seriously:

  • We never ask for your immigration status, A-Number, receipt number, or case details.
  • We don't use your account or what you do on Citizenshiply to guess your immigration status.
  • We never sell your personal information or share it for advertising.
  • We share account information only with the service providers listed below, to run the service, or when the law requires it.
  • In the practice interview, you don't have to share your real personal history. You can use a practice profile instead.
  • Analytics never receive your email address, your immigration details, or what you type into the tools, and we keep Google Analytics' advertising features turned off.

Who we share it with

We share information only with service providers that help us run Citizenshiply. They may use it only to provide their service to us. Each one has its own privacy policy:

We don't sell personal information, and we don't share it for advertising based on your activity across other websites.

We may disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a valid court order, or when it's needed to protect someone's safety.

Cookies and browser storage

This website (www.citizenshiply.com) uses analytics cookies from PostHog and Google Analytics, listed below. It has no ads.

The free tools use your browser's storage (called localStorage) to save your progress. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data, or using the "Clear my data" button on a tool, removes it, and your progress with it.

The practice interview app (interview.citizenshiply.com) uses cookies to keep you signed in and for PostHog analytics. It doesn't use advertising cookies. The checkout is a secure frame from Paddle, which may set its own cookies there.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the sites still work without them. Google also offers a browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics.

How long we keep it

  • Tool progress: in your browser until you clear it. We never receive it.
  • Addresses typed into the lookup: not stored by us.
  • Account data: until you delete your account. Deleting it removes your account, settings, and balance right away.
  • Payment records: kept after you delete your account, for 7 years, because the law and our accounting require it. Our copy stays, but it is no longer connected to your account. Paddle keeps its own record of the payment, including your email address, for as long as the law and card networks require, under its own privacy policy.
  • Analytics data: Google Analytics keeps it for 2 months, and PostHog for up to 7 years. After that, they delete it.
  • Request logs: kept for a short time by Railway, under its own policies.
  • Emails you send us: as long as we need them to answer you and follow up.
  • Backups: deleted information can remain in our database provider's backups for a limited time before they're replaced.

We'll update this policy before the practice interview and purchases become available.

Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your information, such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), database rules that let each person see only their own account data, and providers with strong security practices.

No way of storing or sending information is perfectly secure, so we can't promise that it will never be accessed without permission. If a breach affects your information, we'll tell you as the law requires.

Your choices and rights

You can:

  • See and download your data. Use "Download my data" on your account page. You'll get a file with your account, settings, balance, purchases, and credit history.
  • Correct it. Change your language and email preferences on your account page. To change your email address, contact us.
  • Delete your account. Use the delete option on your account page. It deletes your account, settings, and balance. Our payment records are kept without your account attached, and Paddle keeps its own; see How long we keep it.
  • Stop marketing emails. Turn them off on your account page at any time. Sign-in emails are still sent, because you need them to sign in.
  • Clear tool data. Clear your browser storage, or use "Clear my data" on each tool.
  • Opt out of analytics. Block or delete cookies in your browser, or use Google's opt-out add-on for Google Analytics.
  • Ask us. Write to [email protected] with any question or request about your information.

Depending on where you live, the law may give you other rights. We won't treat you differently for using them.

"Do Not Track" and similar signals

Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signal. When your browser sends Global Privacy Control, our sites don't load analytics. We don't track you across other websites, use advertising cookies, or sell or share your information for advertising.

Children

Citizenshiply is meant for adults. You must be at least 18 to create an account. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.

Where your information is stored

Account data is stored by Supabase in the United States (AWS us-east-1). Our websites are hosted by Railway, which runs them in the United States (Railway US East). Some providers may also process information in other countries.

Analytics data is stored by PostHog in the United States (PostHog US Cloud), and by Google on servers in the United States and other countries.

If you use Citizenshiply from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we'll post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also email account holders before it takes effect. Past changes are listed in the version history.
