Question 120Symbols

Where is the Statue of Liberty?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • New York (Harbor)
  • Liberty Island [Also acceptable are New Jersey, near New York City, and on the Hudson (River).]

What does this answer mean?

The Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbor, on Liberty Island. USCIS accepts "New York Harbor" or "Liberty Island," and the official list notes that New Jersey, near New York City, and on the Hudson River are also acceptable.

The statue was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States. It was built in France, taken apart, shipped to New York in pieces in 1885, and put back together on a stone pedestal paid for in the United States. President Grover Cleveland dedicated it on October 28, 1886.

It was proposed to celebrate the friendship between the two countries and the centennial of American independence. The statue's full name is "Liberty Enlightening the World." Today it's a national monument managed by the National Park Service.

At the interview, the simplest answer is "New York Harbor."
