Question 105Recent American History and Other Important Historical Information

Who was president during the Great Depression and World War II?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • (Franklin) Roosevelt

What does this answer mean?

Franklin Roosevelt was president during the Great Depression and World War II. USCIS accepts "Roosevelt" or "Franklin Roosevelt."

Roosevelt, often called FDR, took office in March 1933, during the worst years of the Depression. He had promised "a New Deal" for Americans, and his administration quickly passed laws creating new programs and agencies to provide jobs and relief.

He also led the country into World War II. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war, and it did so the next day.

Roosevelt is the president who was elected four times, in 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944. He died in 1945, early in his fourth term, before the war ended. After his presidency, the 22nd Amendment limited presidents to two elected terms, which is the answer to another question on the test.

At the interview, say "Franklin Roosevelt."
