Question 78Colonial Period and IndependenceOn the 65/20 list

Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • (Thomas) Jefferson

What does this answer mean?

Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. USCIS accepts "Jefferson" or "Thomas Jefferson."

In June 1776, the Continental Congress appointed a committee of five to draft a statement declaring independence: John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson wrote the original draft. Franklin and Adams suggested changes, and Congress edited it further before adopting it on July 4, 1776. Even with those changes, the final document is still largely Jefferson's work.

Jefferson, from Virginia, went on to a long public career. He was the first Secretary of State, the third president of the United States, and the president who doubled the size of the country with the Louisiana Purchase. Those facts are answers to another question on the test, which asks what Jefferson is famous for.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. At the interview, say "Thomas Jefferson."

Memory tip
