Question 73Colonial Period and Independence

The colonists came to America for many reasons. Name one.

Answers USCIS accepts

  • Freedom
  • Political liberty
  • Religious freedom
  • Economic opportunity
  • Escape persecution

What does this answer mean?

The colonists came to America for many reasons, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts five: freedom, political liberty, religious freedom, economic opportunity, or escape persecution.

People who settled the 13 colonies came from many places and for different reasons. Some wanted to practice their religion freely, without punishment from a government or an official church. Others hoped for land, work, or the chance to build a better life, which is economic opportunity. Some were escaping persecution, meaning unfair treatment because of their beliefs or who they were, and some wanted a greater say in how they were governed.

Not everyone came by choice. Enslaved Africans were brought to the colonies by force, which is the subject of another question on the test. And American Indians were already living on the land when Europeans arrived.

Several of these reasons, like freedom and liberty, later became central ideas in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

At the interview, the shortest answer is "freedom."

Memory tip

Colonists came for freedom: of religion, of politics, and to work.
