You usually don't need to renew it. As of November 2026, once you properly file Form N-400, the receipt notice USCIS sends you automatically extends your green card for 2 years from the "Card Expires" date printed on it.
Our documents checklist covers every document for your application. This article covers what to do when your card's date is coming up while you wait.
How does the extension work?
USCIS says the N-400 receipt notice serves as proof that your green card has been extended. That makes the two documents a pair:
- Your green card still proves who you are and shows the original expiration date.
- Your receipt notice shows the extension, which runs 2 years from that date.
USCIS says to show the notice together with your green card.
When do I still need Form I-90?
Form I-90 is the application to replace or renew a green card. USCIS says you generally must still file it, even with a pending N-400, if:
- You lose your green card. The receipt notice extends a card; it doesn't replace a lost one.
- You lose the receipt notice, or it's destroyed, and your card is expiring. Without the notice, you have no proof of the extension.
If either applies, check the I-90 page on uscis.gov for the current filing instructions and fee.
Do I need to carry it?
Yes. USCIS says permanent residents must have a valid, unexpired green card or equivalent documentation with them at all times, and that applying for citizenship doesn't change this. Once your card's printed date has passed, the receipt notice is what shows the extension, so carry both.
Bring your green card and receipt notice to your appointments too, and follow the "what to bring" list on each notice.
What if my case is complicated?
Talk to a professional if your green card was issued with conditions, if you've had long trips abroad, or if anything else about your status is unclear. Those situations have their own rules.
