What does this answer mean?

The Civil War had many important events, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts eight: the Battle of Fort Sumter, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, Sherman's March, the surrender at Appomattox, the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg), or the assassination of Lincoln.

In order: the war began at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. The Battle of Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day of the war. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania, was fought July 1 to 3, 1863, and Vicksburg, Mississippi, surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863. Union General William T. Sherman later led a march through the South. The main Confederate army surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, and President Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865.

At the interview, an easy answer is "the Emancipation Proclamation" or "Gettysburg."
