What does this answer mean?

Abraham Lincoln is famous for many things, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts five: he freed the slaves (Emancipation Proclamation), saved or preserved the Union, led the United States during the Civil War, was the 16th president of the United States, and delivered the Gettysburg Address.

Lincoln was president during the Civil War, which began in 1861, soon after he took office. His main goal was to keep the country together, which is what saving or preserving the Union means.

On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in the states in rebellion free. Later that year, on November 19, 1863, he gave the Gettysburg Address, a short speech at the dedication of a cemetery for Union soldiers killed at Gettysburg. It's now considered one of his greatest speeches.

Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., days after the main Confederate army surrendered.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. At the interview, say "16th president of the United States" or "freed the slaves."

Memory tip
