What does this answer mean?

Name the person serving as President of the United States on the day of your interview. The answer can change, so USCIS asks for the official in office at the time of your naturalization interview and posts current answers on its test updates page. The answer above is the one we last checked there.

The president is elected for a four-year term. Under the 22nd Amendment, no one can be elected president more than twice. A new term starts at noon on January 20, a date set by the 20th Amendment. If a president can no longer serve, the vice president becomes president.

The president leads the executive branch, signs bills into law or vetoes them, and is Commander in Chief of the military. Several other questions on the test ask about these powers, so it helps to study them together.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list, so applicants who qualify for that special consideration study it too.

Memory tip

Check the name again the week of your interview; the full name or the last name is accepted.
