Question 116Recent American History and Other Important Historical Information

Name one U.S. military conflict after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Answers USCIS accepts

  • (Global) War on Terror
  • War in Afghanistan
  • War in Iraq

What does this answer mean?

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States fought in several military conflicts, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts three: the (Global) War on Terror, the War in Afghanistan, or the War in Iraq.

The attacks on September 11 were carried out by 19 hijackers trained by the terrorist group al Qaeda. In response, the United States began a broad campaign against terrorist groups and the countries that sheltered them, which became known as the War on Terror.

The War in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq were two separate conflicts in this period, and both involved American troops over many years. Any of the three names is accepted.

At the interview, an easy answer is "the War in Afghanistan" or "the War on Terror."
