What does this answer mean?

Name the person serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives on the day of your interview. The answer can change, so USCIS asks for the official in office at the time of your interview and lists the current answer on its test updates page. The answer above is the one we last checked there.

The Constitution says the House chooses its own Speaker. The House elects a Speaker at the start of each new Congress, and again if the office becomes empty. The Speaker presides over the House, acts as its political leader, and runs its administration.

By law, the Speaker is second in line to become president, after the vice president. That's one reason this office is important enough to be on the test.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. Check the name again shortly before your interview, especially after an election or a change in House leadership.

Memory tip

The Speaker leads the House and is next in line after the vice president.
