What does this answer mean?

There are many American Indian tribes in the United States, and you only need to name one. The USCIS list includes the Apache, Blackfeet, Cayuga, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Choctaw, Creek, Crow, Hopi, Huron, Inupiat, Lakota, Mohawk, Mohegan, Navajo, Oneida, Onondaga, Pueblo, Seminole, Seneca, Shawnee, Sioux, Teton, and Tuscarora. It also points to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a complete list.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, the federal agency that works with tribal nations, says the federal government recognizes 575 tribes. Federally recognized tribes have a government-to-government relationship with the United States, and many have their own governments, laws, and lands.

This question goes with another one on the test: American Indians, also called Native Americans, are the answer to who lived in America before the Europeans arrived.

Choose a tribe whose name is easy for you to say, perhaps one from the area where you live. At the interview, an easy answer is "Cherokee" or "Navajo."

Memory tip

Pick one tribe you can say easily: Cherokee or Navajo.
