Question 118Recent American History and Other Important Historical Information

Name one example of an American innovation.

Answers USCIS accepts

  • Light bulb
  • Automobile (cars, internal combustion engine)
  • Skyscrapers
  • Airplane
  • Assembly line
  • Landing on the moon
  • Integrated circuit (IC)

What does this answer mean?

There are many American innovations, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts seven: the light bulb, the automobile (cars, the internal combustion engine), skyscrapers, the airplane, the assembly line, landing on the moon, and the integrated circuit (IC).

An innovation is a new invention, idea, or way of doing something. Each item on the list changed how people live or work. The assembly line, for example, changed how products are made by moving the work from one worker to the next, and the integrated circuit, a tiny electronic chip, made modern computers and phones possible.

Landing on the moon is one of the best-known achievements on the list. On July 20, 1969, during NASA's Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, and Buzz Aldrin followed him about 20 minutes later.

You don't need to know who invented each one, only to name one example. At the interview, an easy answer is "the airplane" or "the light bulb."
