Answers USCIS accepts

  • “Father of Our Country”
  • First president of the United States
  • General of the Continental Army
  • President of the Constitutional Convention

What does this answer mean?

George Washington is famous for many things, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts four: the "Father of Our Country," the first president of the United States, the general of the Continental Army, or the president of the Constitutional Convention.

Washington led the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He commanded the army through hard times, including the winter of 1777 to 1778 at Valley Forge, and he was there when the British surrendered at Yorktown in 1781.

In 1787, the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia chose him to lead the meeting. Two years later, he became the first president under the new Constitution, taking the oath of office in New York City on April 30, 1789. He served two terms and then stepped down, a tradition later presidents followed until it was written into the Constitution with the 22nd Amendment.

His role in founding the country is why he's called the "Father of Our Country."

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. At the interview, say "first president of the United States."

Memory tip
