What does this answer mean?

Thomas Jefferson is famous for many things, and you only need to name one. USCIS accepts six: writer of the Declaration of Independence, third president of the United States, doubled the size of the United States (Louisiana Purchase), first Secretary of State, founded the University of Virginia, or writer of the Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom.

Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, working for a committee of five appointed by the Continental Congress. Under President George Washington, he served as the first Secretary of State, in charge of relations with other countries.

As the third president, Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, when the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The purchase roughly doubled the size of the country, and it's the answer to another question on the test.

In his home state of Virginia, Jefferson wrote a law protecting religious freedom and founded the University of Virginia.

At the interview, the easiest answer is "writer of the Declaration of Independence."

Memory tip
