Question 76Colonial Period and Independence

What war did the Americans fight to win independence from Britain?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • American Revolution
  • The (American) Revolutionary War
  • War for (American) Independence

What does this answer mean?

The Americans fought the American Revolution to win independence from Britain. USCIS accepts three names for it: the American Revolution, the American Revolutionary War, or the War for American Independence.

The war began in 1775, before the Declaration of Independence. Early battles included Bunker Hill, fought near Boston on June 17, 1775. In 1776, the Continental Congress declared independence, and the fighting continued for years. The Continental Army, led by General George Washington, won key victories, including at Saratoga in 1777. The British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781, effectively ended the fighting.

The war officially ended with the Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3, 1783, in which Britain recognized the United States as a free and independent nation.

Another question asks you to name an important event of the Revolution, and several of these battles are on that list.

At the interview, say "the American Revolution" or "the Revolutionary War."

Memory tip

Revolution: 1775 start, 1781 Yorktown, 1783 peace.
