What does this answer mean?
Name the person serving as Chief Justice of the United States on the day of your interview. The answer can change, so USCIS asks for the official in office at the time of your interview and lists the current answer on its test updates page. The answer above is the one we last checked there.
The Chief Justice leads the Supreme Court and is one of its nine justices. Like the other justices, the Chief Justice is nominated by the president, confirmed by the Senate, and serves during good behavior, usually for life. That's why this answer changes less often than the answers about elected officials. John G. Roberts, Jr., became Chief Justice on September 29, 2005.
The Constitution gives the Chief Justice one special job: presiding over the Senate trial when a president is impeached.
Note the official title. It's "Chief Justice of the United States," not only of the Supreme Court. Check the name again shortly before your interview.
Memory tip
The Chief Justice is the chief of the nine justices.
