Answers for every state and territory

What does this answer mean?

Name the governor of the state where you live. Each state elects its own governor, so the answer depends on where you live, and you need to name the person serving on the day of your interview.

The governor is the head of a state's executive branch, much like the president is for the country. Governors carry out state laws and lead the state government from the state capital, which is the answer to the next question on the test. In every state, the people elect their governor directly.

Because governors change after elections, check the name shortly before your interview, especially after an election in your state.

If you live in Washington, D.C., USCIS's official answer is that D.C. does not have a governor. D.C. is led by a mayor instead. If you live in a U.S. territory, such as Puerto Rico or Guam, name the governor of your territory.
