Question 74Colonial Period and IndependenceOn the 65/20 list

Who lived in America before the Europeans arrived?

Answers USCIS accepts

  • American Indians
  • Native Americans

What does this answer mean?

American Indians lived in America before the Europeans arrived. USCIS accepts "American Indians" or "Native Americans."

Many different peoples lived across North America long before European settlers came, each with its own languages, governments, and ways of life. When the colonists arrived, they settled on lands that were already home to these nations.

Today, the federal government recognizes 575 tribes, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the federal agency that works with tribal nations. Federally recognized tribes have a government-to-government relationship with the United States.

Another question on the test asks you to name one American Indian tribe, so it helps to learn this question and that one together. That list includes the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Apache, and many others.

This is one of the 20 questions on the 65/20 list. At the interview, say "American Indians" or "Native Americans."

Memory tip

Native means they were here first: Native Americans.
